5 Ways to Boost Your Resilience and Avoid C-Suite Burnout

5_Ways_to_Boost_Your_Resilience_and_Avoid_C-Suite_Burnout.jpgStressed out at work? You’re certainly not alone. In fact, according to research compiled by CEO.com, 40% of workers say their job is “very or extremely stressful,” and 29% report being “extremely stressed out at work.” Like it or not, climbing the corporate ladder brings with it a number of negatives, not the least of which is the risk of completely burning out – particularly in the chaotic property management field. The good news is there are some things that you can do proactively to help prevent this from occurring in your c-suite.

Practice Mindfulness

Not only does exercising your mind reduce stress, but some social scientists believe that practicing mindfulness can help with judgment accuracy and insight-related problem solving. How can you implement mindfulness within your property management organization? Some studies have shown that multimodal learning that includes a combination of on-site, mobile and peer-to-peer skills training has been highly effective.

Detach and Unplug

Everyone has their own natural peaks and valleys in terms of energy level. Getting to know yours can go a long way toward better managing your emotions, stress levels and resiliency. Experts indicate that mental focus, energy and clarity are best achieved at peak intervals of between 90-120 minutes with breaks in between. Stepping away from your office and focusing on anything but work for even just a few minutes here and there throughout the day can do wonders for your performance and your mental health.

Become Mentally Agile

The key to mastering resiliency at work lies not in denying or suppressing stress, but rather in learning how to best deal with situations and circumstances that bring about tension. This is particularly helpful in the fast-paced property management industry. Work on developing your mental agility so that when a stressful moment arises you are able to pause, take a step back, observe the situation from a neutral standpoint and then apply your problem-solving skills accordingly.

Compartmentalize Information

As a property management executive, you are undoubtedly bombarded with information from every direction on a daily basis. Realistically, you can only adequately process a small portion of that incoming data. In fact, trying to do more will only lead to frustration and burnout. While reducing how much information is coming your way isn’t always feasible, compartmentalizing that info can make it easier to process. Try scheduling specific blocks of time each day to tackle each item on your to-do list and focus solely on the task at hand during those times.

Develop and Foster Compassion

Rarely is compassion listed as a critical skill for executive leadership, but it is, in fact, quite important. In fact, practicing compassion – with yourself and with others – creates a more positive work environment, which leads to a stronger corporate culture that promotes collaboration and facilitates innovation. Furthermore, being compassionate can help improve your own wellbeing and happiness, which will make you a much more effective leader.

The future of your property management organization depends on whether or not those in leadership are capable of manning the ship without succumbing to the many demands and pressures that they face each and every day. By putting the steps above into action, you and everyone else in the c-suite will be able to stay a step ahead of stress, avoid burnout and focus your skills on the ongoing growth and success of the business.
