As a successful property management professional, you already know what it takes to make your business run well. When it comes to hiring others, however, it’s important that you know what outside skills and characteristics to look for. As you weed through your available candidates, keep an eye out for individuals who possess the following qualities, as they tend to be the core for great property managers.
Organizational Skills
In this, we wear a lot of hats. We also juggle a wide variety of important tasks on a day to day basis. For this reason, one of the most critical skills needed to be successful is the ability to organize, prioritize and manage a hectic schedule. Ask your candidates to describe how they manage their daily routines and look for those who seem to be on top of their game.

Leadership
You may be bringing in this person on an entry-level basis now, but as your business grows, so will your need for qualified professionals. It’s almost always better to promote from within, so look for candidates that demonstrate leadership skills. This can provide you with a much better pool to select from when the time comes to expand your business.
Honesty and Integrity
If you want your clients to trust your company, you must hire people who will effectively represent your brand. Honesty and integrity are critical characteristics that will protect your hard-earned success down the road. Do they seem transparent in their answers and in the information they’ve provided? This is something you simply don’t want to compromise on.
Attention to Detail
Similar to organizational skills, a good property manager doesn’t let important details slip through the cracks. The ability to stay on top of incoming requests, manage day to day duties and ensure that all necessary work gets completed on time and correctly are all essential components of a successful property management professional. Make sure you choose candidates that have a proven track record for their strong attention to detail.

Communication Skills
This includes both the ability to clearly articulate messages to others as well as the ability to listen and comprehend. Pay attention during the interview process. How does the individual answer your questions? Can he or she effectively understand what you’re asking and provide concise, thoughtful and articulate answers? If so, you’ve probably got an excellent communicator on your hands.
While each person is unique and brings his or her own special skillset to the table, these five qualities should be present in all of the candidates you consider. This will improve the chances of hiring the right individuals that will help you grow your business and make it a success, year after year.
