Slowly but surely, the millennial generation is beginning to make its way into the workplace. Subsequently, these younger folks will also be seeking housing as they branch out on their own. A while back, we shared some helpful tips for marketing to millennials, but to really reach these up-and-comers, you have to truly understand who they are, what they want and what makes them tick. So, without further ado, here are 5 things you need to know about millennials.
Pets are a huge part of their lives
More than 76% of millennials own at least one pet, and they consider these special little creatures to be an important part of their lives. This means that those looking at rentals will be highly likely to look for a place that is pet friendly. If you happen to have any rental properties that fall into this category, it can be a huge selling point for you.

They prefer to cook than eat out
Well, slightly more than half of them do anyway. At last count, the number of millennials that said they prefer cooking a meal at home over going out to eat came in at 61%. For these prospects, a spacious, modern kitchen can be something that really makes your place irresistible.
They feel strongly about giving back
Despite the general consensus that the next generation is filled with ungrateful, greedy and entitled people, the majority of millennials (63%) make giving back a big part of their lives. If you are involved in any local charities or other community support activities, make sure you make it known as this could be just the thing that attracts the attention of your younger prospects.
They’re super tech-savvy
Millennials grew up in a time when the internet and things like smartphones and mobile devices were a part of everyday life. So, it’s not really surprising that 38% of this generation prefers to use the web for most transactions – including paying their rent. In fact, 21% of millennials say they have never even written a check before. Providing options, such as online payment ability, will help you stand out.
They prefer texting over talking
Just stroll around any heavily populated area and you’ll see countless young people on their phones, either surfing the net or texting. In fact, 43% of millennials feel that texting is just as meaningful as a phone conversation. You can leverage this by making yourself and others in your office easily accessible by text. Coincidentally, texting is also a great way to keep record of conversations if you ever need to refer back to them.
There’s no doubt about it. Millennials will begin taking over the majority of the population in the years to come. It only stands to reason, then, that businesses must find a way to adapt to the unique needs and desires of this younger generation. That includes the property management industry as well. Keep these five things in mind as you begin to project your future marketing plans and you’ll have a much better chance of attracting the attention of these up-and-comers.
