5 Tips for Creating an Innovative Property Management Culture

5_Tips_for_Creating_an_Innovative_Property_Management_CultureThe Merriam-Webster dictionary defines the word “innovation” as: “the act or process of introducing new ideas, devices, or methods.” Without innovation, we wouldn’t have a fraction of the products and devices we all use on a daily basis (think Steve Jobs and his crazy iPhone idea). The challenge is that it takes much more than just one creative thinker to drive a business forward. It takes an entire culture of innovative thinkers. That said, let’s take a look at how you can transform the culture of your property management organization into one that will consistently improve and succeed.

Invite Ideas

True innovation comes as a result of passion, and that passion can fuel some amazing ideas. The problem is, if those creative ideas aren’t being shared, they aren’t being implemented and your business is missing out. Develop a culture in which your employees are encouraged to share their thoughts and suggestions and reward them for doing so. You’ll be surprised by what may come as a result.

Foster Collaboration

One great idea may not be enough to create a positive change, but when that idea can be discussed with others, it can be improved on and developed into a reality. The old expression, “two heads are better than one” is powerful, particularly when it comes to innovation. If you want your organization to remain out in front of the competition, be sure your culture is one that embraces and facilitates collaboration across the board.

Accept Failure

Dyson is considered to be one of the best vacuums on the market today. That wasn’t always the case, however. In fact, owner James Dyson proudly admits to failing more than 5,100 times before finally getting it right. Why would anyone consider that many failures a victory? The answer is simple: because innovation takes trial and error. If your team is afraid to fail, they’ll never take chances and if they don’t take chances, they’ll never reach that breakthrough that will propel your business to the next level. So, learn from your mistakes and move forward.

Embrace Diversity

If everyone approached every situation from the exact same viewpoint, not only would the world be a boring place, but we’d never experience positive change and progress. When you encourage different team members to come together and share their thoughts from different perspectives, you’ll get a much more robust source of ideas and concepts and from these new ideas will spring great things.

Start Small

Your organization doesn’t necessarily have to come up with the next best thing in property management. Perhaps your innovative breakthrough will just be improving one internal process to boost productivity and efficiency. Don’t be afraid to think on a smaller scale and tackle little things as they come up. That’s just as powerful and effective as a major breakthrough any day. Of course, if your team does put their heads together and develop some amazing advancement that will revolutionize the industry, that’s fine as well!

The ultimate goal of any organization is to grow and improve. The only way to achieve this is through constant development and ongoing innovation. By changing the very culture of your firm, you can create an environment that not only encourages innovation, but uses the creativity and thought leadership of its employees as a catalyst for future success.
