5 Secrets to Becoming an Inspirational Property Management Leader

5_Secrets_to_Becoming_an_Inspirational_LeaderAre you an inspirational leader? You may have the job of managing people down to a science, but do your words and actions inspire others to give 110% and always do their very best? Over the past decade or so, the world of work has begun a fundamental shift from stiff, hierarchical micromanagement to a more flexible, transparent and leadership-driven environment. As such, organizations are starting to realize the importance of developing and improving the skills of managers to make them more effective in leading and empowering others.

That said, here are 5 key characteristics of inspirational leaders and how you can foster them within your property management company.

Passion

It’s been said that one cannot effectively inspire others without first being inspired him or herself. What are your leaders passionate about? Encourage everyone in a position of managing people to discover what drives them personally and you’ll begin to naturally see a shift toward more thoughtful, engaging and effective leadership.

Vulnerability

It may seem counterintuitive to list being vulnerable as a characteristic of a strong leader, but it is, perhaps, the most important feature someone who inspires others should have. Anyone can manage, but it takes a true, human connection to empower and inspire people. Let those in command at your property management company know that it’s ok to be themselves and make mistakes from time to time.

Vision

Inspirational leaders not only have a vision for what the path to success is, but the ability to clearly and articulately paint that picture for others to see as well. A manager may provide a list of instructions and tasks that need to be completed, but a true leader will help each individual understand his or her role and how those duties play into the big picture.

Optimism

There’s no doubt that the property management industry can be a rollercoaster, with all kinds of ups, downs, twists and turns. Leaders who inspire others have the innate ability to keep a positive outlook regardless of the circumstances surrounding them. When the vision is clear and the message is always optimistic, the outcome will be inherently better.

Activism

One of the key differentiators between a manager and a leader is the ability (and willingness) to roll up your sleeves, get your hands dirty and work alongside those who report to you. When employees see that those in charge understand and participate in the day to day work, they’ll gain a newfound respect and appreciation, which will inspire them to do their best.

Let’s face it. Most people don’t look forward to going to work every day. When a workplace is infused and alive with inspirational leadership, however, the entire morale of the company can dramatically improve. Is your property management company just managing or truly inspiring? Perhaps it’s time for a change.
