Hire and Retain the Right People for Your Property Management Team

Hire for Attitude

When searching for the best players to fill any empty spots on your team, it’s important to strike the right balance between experience and attitude. Experience in the property management industry may often be an asset, but be aware that with experience sometimes comes jaded or even negative attitudes, bad habits and entrenched ways of thinking and doing things.

Place considerable weight on the candidate’s personality, outlook and goals. In the interview process try to discover if they identify with and feel inspired by the Vision for your business. Will their words, actions and demeanor effectively represent your brand to customers and other stakeholders? A whole book was written on Hiring for Attitude and training for skill for a reason!

As we appear to be big fans of visualization here, we will suggest that you visualize your ideal candidate and the attributes that they possess. This will give you a good idea of who you are looking for, making it much easier to weed out the ones who are not a good fit.

Train for Skill

Once you have your property management dream team in place, set them up for success by offering extensive hands-on training, both in the office and out in the field. Make sure everyone knows how to use the tools at their disposal, and that the doors to communication and collaboration are wide open. The more time you invest in training, the higher the level of performance you will get from your team.
