6 Things to Say to Keep Property Management Employees Happy and Engaged

Keep Property Management Employees Happy and EngagedPart of the job of someone in management is to lead, nurture and support the employees who report to them. The goal is not just to get people to do their jobs well, but to find a way to keep them happy, plugged in and engaged. The more satisfied your employees are, the better your property management company will run and less you’ll have to deal with the hassle and expense of high turnover. To work toward this goal, here are a few words of motivation and encouragement to add to your repertoire.

“I am confident in you.”

Few things can inspire someone to perform at their very best quite like giving them the ability to do so and letting them know you believe they are wholly capable. Empowering your employees to spread their wings and fly will demonstrate your trust in them, which they will strive to maintain. Don’t expect perfection, but be patient and willing to help them get back on the right track.

“I want to accomplish [fill-in-the-blank].”

It may seem ridiculously simple, but you might be surprised at how many leaders fail at this little step. Communication is the key to keeping your property management company running like a well-oiled machine, and that begins by providing your employees with clear instructions and setting measurable goals for them to work toward. Always be as specific as possible.

“What can we do differently/better next time?”

Your employees aren’t always going to knock it out of the park, and frankly, neither are you. The mark of a good leader is the ability to step back, calmly and objectively assess the situation and make the appropriate adjustments moving forward. If your employees make a mistake, be willing to work with them on how to turn things around. Guide them. Coach them. Provide ongoing feedback. And above all, show them that you support them through it all.

“What do you think?”

Another powerful way to get your employees fully engaged is to show them that you truly value their opinions. They’re not just cogs on the wheel, but an active participant and contributing factor to the success of your company. The more you solicit feedback and put it to good use, the more involved your team will become in working toward the greater good.

“What can I do for you?”

Many managers lose sight of the fact that part of their job is to lend support to those who work for them. It’s not just what they can do for you, but also what you can do to help facilitate a better work environment for them. Show your employees that you care about what matters to them and are actively engaged with creating a workplace where they actually enjoy going every day.

“Great job!”

Last, but certainly not least, never underestimate the power of a pat on the back for a job well done. As a leader, it may be your job to manage, coach and correct people when they do something wrong, but it’s equally important to speak up and recognize when they’ve done something great. Make sure your dialogue covers both ends of the spectrum and never pass up the chance to celebrate how awesome your employees truly are.
