3 Ways to Optimize Your Property Management Leadership

3 Ways to Optimize Your Property Management LeadershipThere is very little that hasn’t changed over the past year and a half, thanks in large part to the pandemic. As a result, there has never been a greater need for strong, human-focused leadership. Within the property management industry, leaders must find better ways to prioritize communication while supplying their teams with the tools and technology they need to perform at their best. If you are in a position of leadership, here are three ways to better achieve your goals.

Delegate Effectively

The people who report to you were hired for a reason. They possess talent and skill. If you are currently taking on some of the tasks and workflows that these qualified individuals are fully capable of handling, you are doing everyone a disservice. Not only is not delegating a tremendous waste of your own time and talents, but it indirectly sends the message that you don’t trust your team.

If you want to lead more effectively, you need to be willing to let go and let your employees thrive. This will enable you to focus on more important objectives, like growth and revenue increase. It will also ensure that your property management company will run more efficiently.

Not sure where to begin? Make a list of at least three day-to-day tasks that you could easily hand off to someone else and then go for it!

Focus on the “Rocks”

Rocks are the biggest, most important things in your life. From a professional standpoint, these are the activities that will ultimately move your property management business forward. All the other little things can be considered sand, which distract and deter you.

Picture a glass jar. If you fill that jar with sand, there won’t be any room for the rocks, which means you’ll be allowing those distractions to sabotage your progress. To the contrary, if you place the rocks into the jar first, the sand will simply fill in the excess spaces.

Make a list of what’s most important in your life and put those things in order of priority. These are the things you should be focusing your time, energy and attention on. Everything else can take a back seat. (Or better yet, you can delegate those other things, as in the previous step.)

Listen More

The successful business leaders of tomorrow will be hyper-focused on the ‘who’, rather than the ‘what’ or the ‘how.’ In other words, they’ll be tuned into their employees. If there’s one single area where you can dramatically improve your leadership abilities, it’s in listening to others.

Learn about the individuals on your team. Find out what their needs, desires and expectations are. Discover what motivates and inspires them. Above all, invite them to share their thoughts and to voice their concerns. And when they do, take action to make improvements in every way possible

Good leadership is fundamental to success in any industry, and property management is no exception. By taking the steps necessary to improve and enhance what you have to offer, you’ll ultimately create a much stronger, more efficient and inclusive workforce which will drive your company in the right direction.
